Tips for Choosing the Right Exhaust fan for your Bathroom Remodel

Those hot showers that everyone in your house enjoys could be doing more damage to your home than you realize! As the moisture and humidity gather in one space, in this case the bathroom, it becomes a perfect place for mold and mildew to grow.

The good news is that there are ways to combat this threat! Choosing and installing the right exhaust fan for your bathroom size is the best defense against mold, moisture, and odors. If you don't already have a fan installed, a bathroom remodel is the perfect time to put one in!

What to Look for When Choosing an Exhaust Fan

Bathroom fans take up very little space, and most of the time you won't even know they're in the room – except when it's time to use it! Here are five things to help you decide when picking the right exhaust fan.

  1. Look at the size of your bathroom and the size of the fan that will work in the area. This is an important step in the process. If the fan is too small for the bathroom, it won't work as effectively, which will defeat the purpose. To choose the right size, figure out the square footage of your bathroom and compare it to the amount of air the fan can move per cubic foot per minute. This information will be found on the packaging of the fan itself.
  2. Decide how your ventilation fan will be installed. Most fans are installed directly into the ceiling of your bathroom, however some can be installed into a wall. All will connect to your home's ventilation system and to an outdoor vent that will carry the excess moisture outside your home. Choose where you'd like the fan installed – the wall or ceiling – and match your model to that decision.
  3. Watch the Noise Level. Bathroom fans have many different levels of sound, and this is an important choice to consider when you're deciding on which fan to install in your bathroom. A loud fan will detract from the tranquility of your bathroom. To choose the right volume level, look at the sones displayed on the specs of the fan. A sone measures how a sound is measured to the average listener. The lower the number, the quieter the sound!
  4. What features are important to you? There are ventilation fans with many different features! Choose from:
    1. Lighting built directly into the fan that will operate as a supplemental light source in your bathroom.
    2. Different controls that allow you to manage the strength of the fan.
    3. Humidity sensors.
    4. Heaters that will add extra warmth when needed.
  5. Check how efficient the fan is before installing. When you choose a fan, look at the efficiency ratings and reviews. This will help ease your mind that this new fan will not increase your energy bill significantly and instead maintain low energy costs.
